Prof. Amanat is offering consultancy and advisory services through BRTC, BUET since 1997.  He acted as a BUET Consultant in a number of BRTC projects.

SOME MAJOR PROJECTS:

  1. Updating Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC), 2015
Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) was introduced in 1993 but not formally reviewed and updated. Since then, major changes have taken place in every discipline of building technology. To make this code time-worthy, Ministry of Housing and Public Works formed a steering committee with the responsibility of updating BNBC 1993 in 2008. In December, 2009 BRTC, BUET was assigned the task of updating the BNBC 1993. Dr. Amanat was one of the key member of the team of consultants who took part in updating the code. As one of the senior structural design consultant, he contributed in many parts of the code. More specifically, he was a major contributor to the Loading part (Part 6 Chapter 2) and Concrete design part as well as he was the main contributor of Steel Design part (Chapter 10). Dr. Amanat is among those very few members of the team whose original research outcomes are incorporated in the code. The outcomes of researches conducted by Dr. Amanat on stair design as well as soft story behavior of brick infilled RC buildings has been incorporated in the code. Considering the long lasting influence of the code in the building and housing development sector as well as its deep influence in the socio-economic aspect of Bangladesh, Dr. Amanat considers his involvement in updating and developing the BNBC code as a big milestone in his  professional career of more than 23 years.

  2. Structural Design of the Superstructure of Moghbazar-Mouchak Flyover Project, 2014
In order to minimize the traffic congestion problems of Dhaka city, the government has undertaken several projects to construct flyovers at different parts of Dhaka city. Moghbazar-Mouchak Flyover Project is one such project that costs about Tk. 1200 crore (US$ 150 million). On behalf of the government, Local Govt. Engineering Dept. (LGED) was given the task to implement the project. The planning and design of the project was done by a consultant appointed by LGED who designed it partly as PC girder span type and partly as precast and pre-stressed box girder type. However, at the time of construction, it was revealed that due to many unforeseen constraint, the structural design of the box girder portion proposed by the consultant is not implementable and the said consultant is no longer available to resolve the issue. LGED then approached BRTC, BUET for a revised structural design and a team of consultants was formed. Dr. Amanat was among the core members of the consultancy team responsible for the revised structural design and to prepare relevant detailed drawings for the box girder spans. It may be noted that this is the first time precast and pre-stressed box girder spans are designed completely in Bangladesh. As a member of the design team, Dr. Amanat was responsible for resolving various technical issues related to the structural design and to prepare the detailed design drawings.

  3. Consultancy Services for the Repair and Rehabilitation of The Meghna and The Meghna-Gumti Bridges on Dhaka-Chittagong National Highway, 2012
The Meghna and the Meghna-Gumti bridges were constructed in 1991 and in 1995 respectively on the Dhaka-Chittagong national highway N1 with Japanese assistance and aid. The bridges are of balanced cantilever form having hinges/expansion joints midway between adjacent piers. However due to lack of proper maintenance as well as due to increase in traffic load, the expansion joints and the hinge bearings experience sever damage. An attempt was made in 2005 to repair the expansion joints only. However, the repair work did not last long. It was also observed that due to change in river morphology, significant riverbed scouring occurred underneath the bridge especially from piers P6 to P9. In 2012 another attempt was made by the Roads and Highways Department to repair the expansion joints and the hinge bearings. In order to review the situation to prescribe appropriate solutions to the problem a 4-member team of consultant was formed from BRTC, BUET. The consultancy work involved reviewing the documents and reports submitted earlier by other consultants, suggest immediate measures against scouring of the riverbed underneath the bridge, suggest replacement and repair of expansion joints and the hinge bearings, suggest work methodology for the immediate and long term measures, suggest traffic management during the rehabilitation works etc.  As a member of the BUET consultants team, Dr. Amanat was responsible for the structural design aspects of the repair and rehabilitation work.
The final repair and rehabilitation works cost Tk.245 Crore (US$ 31 million)

  4. Top Supervision of the Repair Works of the Cracks on the Deck Slab of Bangabandhu Bridge, 2012
Repair of cracks on the deck slab of Bangabandhu Bridge started in 2011 and has been finished in June 2013 at a cost of Tk. 277 crore (US$ 35 million). The repair work has been a one-of-kind work manifesting an excellent and unique example of modern engineering. The repair work involved blast cleaning of the deck surface, grooving and sealing of cracks using epoxy, applying epoxy primer on the deck, pasting of CFRP strips in the transverse direction using epoxy adhesive, application of non-shrink mortar grout to cover and safeguard the CFRP strips, application of epoxy asphalt waterproofing membrane over the mortar grout and finally laying the 50mm thick stone mastic asphalt wearing course. The repair work also included replacing the worn out modular expansion joints with new ones. Due to the uniqueness of the work, its implementation involved some degree of research and development. Before finalizing the design for repair works, a trial section was prepared. Due to unsatisfactory performance of the 1st trial section, details of the design were modified and a satisfactory design was achieved after two more trials. While the original contract for the whole repair work was one year, it took the whole period only to finalize the design. Thus the project was extended for one more year and the actual repair work was completed in June 2013. As a member of the 4-member top supervision team, Dr. Amanat was actively and thoroughly involved in whole process of repair work which included regular periodic physical inspection of the quality control process of the materials at site and at other laboratories, scrutinize the design submitted by the contractor/consultant and suggest necessary revisions, physical inspect the actual repair work at regular intervals, physically inspect the performance testing of the repair works during implementation, assess the quality and performance of the finished repair work for the performance guaranty period of the contract etc.

  5. Checking of The Structural Adequacy of 100m+ Long Steel Truss Spans of Bridges.
Roads and Highways Department is constructing several bridges all over Bangladesh to improve the road communication network. Design checking of two such bridges namely The Sheikh Lutfor Rahman Bridge (Patgati Bridge) in Gopalgonj district and the Shurma Bridge in Sunamgonj district were done by BRTC, BUET. These two bridges are composed of several short PC girder spans and one 100m or longer central span. BRTC, BUET was assigned the task of checking the structural adequacy of the these 100m or longer spans which are of steel truss structures. As an expert Dr. Amanat was involved in checking the structural adequacy by means of computer based finite element modeling the span, applying vehicle, wind and other loads in accordance with code provisions, analyze the model and check for design adequacy. Dr Amanat was also involved in scrutinizing the submitted fabrication drawings. The scope of work also included checking the temporary erection structure for the bridge.

  6. Investigation of Causes Cracks on the Deck Slab of Bangabandhu Bridge, 2006.
Jamuna Bridge is perhaps the most celebrated and largest civil engineering structure in Bangladesh which cost about 36 Billion Taka (about 900 million US$ that time). Significant longitudinal cracks on the deck of this bridge were seen in 2005 and the bridge authority requested BRTC of BUET to investigate the matter. As a member of the team of consultants, Dr. Amanat was immediately engaged in investigating the matter. He played the key role of performing detailed analysis of the bridge to investigate the causes of cracking. Using sophisticated finite element packages, a comprehensive 3D model of a 7-span module with detailed application of train, vehicle, pre-stressing and thermal loads was developed. It was definitely a mounting task to do this kind of job maintaining the code provisions, contract requirements etc. within only two months time. However, with co-operation from other members of the team, the job was finished in time. As a part of the job, several visits to the bridge site was also made and high resolution photographs were taken by Dr. Amanat for a later photographic analysis to determine the crack width. The work of Dr. Amanat formed the core of the investigation report prepared by BRTC of BUET.

  7. Crack Propagation Analysis Of Culverts/Underpass On The Approach Road Of Jamuna Bridge, 1997.
Immediately after construction of the culverts and underpasses beneath the approach road of Jamuna Bridge, severe cracks occurred in the culverts and Dr. Amanat was immediately engaged as a member of a team of consultants to investigate the cause of cracking and possible repair mechanism. Dr. Amanat, along with Dr. Bashir Ahmed, was given the responsibility to perform a numerical analysis of the soil structure interaction of the culvert with embankment soil. A comprehensive three dimensional FE model as developed by them where the culvert, soil and the culvert-soil interface was separately modeled using appropriate elements and the whole system was analyzed for stresses. It was found that the cause of cracking was due to stress produced in the direction of stream due to complex soil-structure interaction not covered in the standard design methods and codes.

  8. Consultancy Services for Construction of a 12 Storied Residential Tower Building for the Senior Teachers and Officers of The University of Dhaka, 2009.
The authority of the University of Dhaka decided to construct a 12 storied residential tower building for its senior teachers and officers in 2009 and appointed BRTC, BUET as the consultant for the project through single source selection method. On behalf of BUET, a team of consultants led by Dr. Amanat was formed to render the required services. The building constituted 66 apartments, about 2000 sq.ft each, on the 1st to 11th floors. The ground and the semi-basement floors were reserved for about 85 parking spaces, generator room, electrical room, guard and drivers rest area and the entry lobby etc. Each of the upper residential floors covered about 14,000 sq.ft. There is a community space of about 3000 sq.ft on the roof. The whole project constitutes about 1,90,000 sq.ft of construction. The scope of the consultation work included all the consultancy services required to plan and implement a building construction project. The team led by Dr. Amanat was involved in site survey, geotechnical sub-soil investigation, preparation of architectural, structural  foundation, plumbing, firefighting and electrical design drawings and documents, 3D rendered architectural views, bill of quantities and cost estimate, preparation of tender documents and top supervision of the construction works.

  9. Advisory Consultancy Services for Construction of a Five Commercial Buildings of Rupali Bank Ltd. at Different Locations of Bangladesh, 2011.
Rupali Bank Ltd. decided to construct five commercial buildings at different locations of Bangladesh. These buildings include ten storied buildings, one in each of Mymensing and Comilla city, a seventeen storied building in Chittagong city and a fifteen and a thirty storied building in Dhaka city. Third party design consultants were appointed by Rupali Bank for the necessary consultation services. Afterwards, Rupali Bank Ltd. appointed BRTC, BUET as an advisor to oversee the works of the consultants, review their design and to suggest modifications, if any, as required. As a member of the team of consultants, Dr. Amanat is providing the required services. The scope of work of BRTC BUET includes checking all the architectural, structural, plumbing and electrical design drawings, scrutinizing the bill of quantities and cost estimate of the projects and finally checking the tender documents prepared by the consultants.

  10. Consultancy Services For Checking the Design of 37 Storied Commercial Building with Car Park of Dhaka City Corporation, 2004
This is so far the tallest building project of Bangladesh. BRTC of BUET was assigned the task of checking the structural design of this building and make modifications as necessary as well as to do the top supervision. Dr. Amanat, along with another team member Dr. Tahsin R. Hossain, was given the responsibility to develop finite element model of the building and to analyze for loads as per design codes. A full three dimensional finite element model was developed for this building using shell and frame elements. Modeling included slabs (shell elements), beams and columns (frame elements) , core/shear walls (shell elements) as well as foundation (thick shell elements) and soil (soil spring elements) and the whole system was analyzed for stresses. Based on the results of numerical analysis necessary modifications were suggested for the design submitted by the consultant.

  11. Consultancy Services for Checking the Design of Several High-rise Commercial Buildings in Dhaka City
Checking the design of multistoried high-rise buildings is one of the most common tasks performed by BRTC, BUET. As an expert structural consultant, Dr. Amanat had been involved in checking the structural design of several notable high-rise building structures constructed in the recent past. These projects include 21-storied commercial building of Peoples’ Insurance Co. Ltd. at Motijheel (1998), 20-storied corporate office building of PKSF at Agargaon (1998), 20‑storied commercial building of Shadharan Bima Corp. with 5 floors of car parking at Motijheel (2004), 20-storied commercial building of Agrani Bank at Motijheel (2014), 5-storied building with 3 basements for the Liberation War Museum at Agargaon (2012) etc. In all these projects Dr. Amanat was involved in developing finite element computer models of the buildings and analyze them in accordance with code provisions for design adequacy.

  12. Checking of Structural Design of Press Box at Bangabandhu National Stadium to Identify Causes of Collapse, 2007
As a part of renovation of the National Stadium in Dhaka, a new Press Box (Media Centre) was constructed on the western gallery in 2006. The roof of the Press Box structure collapsed in Oct. 2007. Immediately after the collapse, upon request from National Sports Council, a team of consultants was formed to investigate the matter in which Dr. Amanat was a member. As a member of the investigation team, Dr. Amanat made several visits to the site to collect evidences. He also developed a full 3D finite element model of the structure to analyse the roof. Standard loading as well as accidental environmental loading were considered in the model. Both static as well as dynamic analysis of the collapse sequence was modeled and analysed. The analysis clearly showed how the collapse took place after it was initiated by a weak hook that supported one of the six supporting trusses. It was duly identified that the collapse was due to the accidental flooding of the roof by rainwater due to clogged outlets. The overloading caused by the weight of excessive rainwater tripped a hook supporting a truss and a progressive collapse was initiated.

  13. Repair and Retrofitting of the Concourse Hall and Platform of Dhaka Railway Station, 2003
The uniquely shaped shell structure of Dhaka Railway Station is one of its kind in Bangladesh and stands as a symbol of Dhaka city. It was built in 1970's and now suffering from cracks and distress. Since this is a nationally important structure, its preservation is very important and as such the railway authority assigned BRTC of BUET to investigate the causes of cracking and to suggest repair and retrofitting scheme for it. Dr. Amanat, as the leader of the three member team, took the responsibility to investigate the causes of distress and cracking. A thorough site investigation was made to assess the existing condition. Thorough and comprehensive finite element model of the structures were developed and static and dynamic analysis were performed as per design codes. A full three dimensional finite element model was developed for this building using shell and frame elements. Dr. Amanat also took the responsibility to prepare a detailed report (with necessary detailing sketches and illustrations) outlining the step by step guideline to repair the structures by means of ferro-cement overlaying technology which contained more than a hundred CAD illustrations to visually guide the local engineers, workers and masons so that the repairing work can be done easily.

  14. Checking of the Structural Design of National Theater, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (1998).
A theater hall and gallery structure built by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy collapsed during construction resulting in casualties and became a hot topic of discussion nationwide with wide media coverage. Afterwards, BRTC, BUET was involved in checking the adequacy of the structural design. Dr. Amanat was given the responsibility to develop finite element model of the building and to analyze for loads as per design codes. A full three dimensional finite element model was developed for this building using shell and frame elements. Modeling included slabs (shell elements), beams and columns (frame elements) and the whole system was analyzed for stresses. The numerical analysis revealed that the design submitted by the consultant was somewhat under-designed and necessary modifications were suggested. Since some of the elements were already constructed, special retrofitting scheme was suggested to strengthen these elements.

  15. Design and Checking the Adequacy of Self Supporting Steel Lattice Towers
The period between 1997 to 2005 saw a booming of mobile telephony in Bangladesh as a part of which several steel towers have been constructed. The job of BRTC of BUET has been to check the structural adequacy of these towers as well as provide fresh design for such towers. As an expert of BRTC, BUET, Dr. Amanat has been involved in majority of the jobs related to the design and checking of towers. Dr. Amanat has developed his own pre and post processing program modules so that the process of checking an existing design or to produce a new design can be done within only a few days. Earlier such work used to take months by BRTC of BUET. The developed pre and post processor program of Dr. Amanat has enabled BRTC of BUET to provide quick and reliable service to clients which was not possible earlier. Also, Dr. Amanat, for the first time in the history of BRTC works, produced complete CAD based detailed shop/fabrication drawings of towers which had been previously thought to be the job of foreign consultants only.

  16. Checking of the Structural Adequacy of the Antenna Mounting Structure on Grameen Bank Building, 2003
A 3 meter diameter microwave dish antenna had been mounted on the roof of 20 storied Grameen Bank Building by GrameenPhone. The Grameen Bank authority wanted that the mounting structure be checked by BRTC experts for safety and adequacy. The main challenge was that the antenna had already been commissioned and all the possible modifications to the structure must be made keeping the antenna functioning. Dr. Amanat was given the sole responsibility to look into the matter. As a part of the work a comprehensive 3D finite element model was developed which included modeling of the mounting frame by beam elements and the base using solid elements. The modeling of the base involved 3D solid CAD modeling and importing it into FE package and meshing. The numerical analysis revealed that the design of the frame was inadequate and a pair of additional members was required to be added to ensure safety. Also the joints were found inadequate against slip and needed retrofitting. Common retrofitting scheme required additional bolting which could have been done if the mounting frame could be dismantled. Since that was not possible, an alternative strengthening scheme involving careful welding of metal parts was suggested and was successfully implemented.
